Bank TellerA bank teller is the person on whom at least fifty per cent of the bank’s jobs are dependent. They have to deal with cash mostly. They have to make payments, getting the receipts for loan accounts or other deposits. They have to perform multiple activities in making payments or receiving payments for bonds, bills, cards, traveler’s checks etc. With the experience they get specialize in some field like foreign currency, bonds, cards etc. While performing these duties, they have to be vigilant and careful. In receiving amounts, they should verify the details of the account holder as well as the cash before giving the receipt. While making payment, they should be careful that it is being given to the right person. There may not be any fraud. They have to count the notes while receiving amount to ensure accuracy. They have to check the genuineness of the notes also because of delicacy in the market. The teller must be careful while performing their duties, they should carefully handle the currency and while leaving their seat for any reason, it should be locked properly. They should handover their cash along with the details and proper accounting to the head teller at the end of the day. Mostly in banks, there is one head teller, whose job is to manage. He has to get the work from the tellers, he has to assign them their duties, he has to manage the cash, if it is in excess, it is to be transferred to currency chest or ATMs, or if it is short then it is to be taken from currency chest or other bank’s chest. He has to sort the cash before doing any of such activity. A teller must be efficient enough to use the advanced technology also. There are note-counting machines, notes genuinely detecting machines, accounting machines and above all customer’s accounts in a computer. He should also be well versed with the products his bank is offering so that he can be helpful to the management to complete the targets. Above all, he should be competent enough to satisfy the customer with his pleasing personality and good service. Job Outlook There are good job prospects for a teller. A teller with good technical skills, able to handle the customers, able to handle the products, able to be helpful to the management can be in great demand. Their role is increasing every day in the bank in order to provide good customer service. Tellers may have to work part-time and on odd days with odd locations. Because of the increasing competition, banks are providing different types of services to their customers by opening counters at different locations and by providing services beyond the working hours of a regular staff. Of course, the new technology is more or less working like the tellers such as the ATMs. A majority of bank customers are fulfilling their needs through ATMs only and not going into the branches. Lane Banking has also helped the customers to operate their account from any location. Technology is a great competitor of Teller but still they are needed to perform.
