A dentist is a career related to health care of teeth and gums and of course if includes the mouth.  There are many fields in dentistry from technical like dental hygiene to surgery.  They normally do filling work of gums, extracting and fitting teeth, putting in crowns etc.  Dentist alone cannot work; they need good assistants also.  So, there is a team of dentists always.

There are certain specialization areas for dentists like Orthodontics – who is involved in the treatment of irregular teeth; Endodontics – who is involved in the treatment of root canal; Periodontics – who is involved in the treatment of gums and jaws; Prosthodontics – who replaces the teeth or parts of jaw; Oral and Maxillofacial – who deals with the injuries and defects of the teeth, jaw and other face related defects; Forensic Odontologists – who deals with the legal matters relating to identification of human remains, bite marks etc; Pediatric dentists – who deals with the child problems of teeth and then last but not the least Public Health Dentists – who works in a dispensary or hospital to correct the teeth problems of whole community.

Dentists need to have a degree from a recognized university, the term for which is four years.  Then for specialization, you have to go for further study.  There are around ten schools in Canada and there are around fifteen thousand dentists in Canada.

There is another job of Dental Hygienists who is involved in guiding the people as to how to prevent the disease.  They perform oral examinations and cleaning of teeth by doing X-rays and other treatments.  They have a smaller course to complete.  There is a one-year course from a university and then two years specialization program, which is offered, in many dental colleges.
